Well done, sounds like it was organised well if the match ups were spot on.

It was an event at Cambridge.
It was organised IMO but one of the girls from my gym fought someone 7KG heavier.
There were quite a few different styles fought, just ashame one of the most awkward ones were against one of my team mates.
Basically, his opponent just lunged at him side on pretty much all through the rounds, both were quite heavy so hard to stop with a teep.
When they were grappling, or even bear hugging because there was no clinch, the guy swung his body left and right like a wall clock ticker and the kept falling on the floor. No knees to make him fall over, no low kick, not even picking him up off the floor, just grab and fall to the floor sideways so he landed on top.
Ah well, Im just looking forward to the next one.

Wasnt singto by any chance?
Tips for the sideways fighters, just be heavy footed, and keep a tight strong guard, and chop their front leg away. You'll learn to impose your thai style against others as your training progresses, rather than try to adapt.
As for the bear hugging, for thai matchups your not allowed to hug the lower back as its an illegal technique, the best way to stop it, is to shoot your hips back, and shoulder into them, or using the plum hold, thrust your elbows into their collar, and then when you either break the hold or create some space, pull back into a knee. Or if you wanna be mean, hold the back of thier head into your chest, and crush thier nose, encourages them not to try it again.
Recording its a very good idea, you and your trainers can break down what you did right, and what to improve on.

Yeah it was rsp.
Ahhhh, the hug was around the mid back but yeah, I see what youre saying.
Hmmm, come to think of it, would it be illegal to bash the side of your forearm or hand upwards into his chin?
I like the crushing nose bit, damn it but wont really be in my arsenal as Im 5'7 and heavy so will pretty much go against someone taller.
Cheers for those tips.

Im 5 "8 mate. You cant chin upwards, but if you press your hand or forearm across thier throat or face and push them away to make some space, to make it stronger, push your arm with the other and force them off balance. Being shorter you can always go for the lower hold and just squeeze and pull your arms in and watch them fold to the matt, (a good ref will recognise it, tho most of the time they dont, would stop it).
If you wanna be sneaky, press your head up under their chin and force the head back, or
if your mean, press your forehead into their jaw line, hurts like mad, gets them thinking about that, leaves you to carry out other techniques. Just remember to push with these and not hit/butt them or the ref will pick up straight away.

Yeah, that was in part of my game plan if the dude was taller but Ive been taught to press my forehead more against the guys cheek bone (if I can reach it lol) but as youve mentioned, I could do the jaw line as well, to crank it up so his face points up.
One of the techniques my trainer got into my head was as Im shorter, to just bear hug them above lower back and squeeze, at the same time, widen feet and bend my knees (imagine a sumo stance) so I have a better base and balance to make it harder to him to swing me one side, then when I feel him take a breath, squeeze again so he has no space to breath.
When I do that a few times, he should be wary of clinching me, either that or just lift and knee so he falls side ways.
Good stuff rsp, its cool having another MT dude about, well, at least who posts.

Cheers. Ive always found, it doesnt matter how heavy someone is generally if their my hieght, there in trouble, its the tall guys (and theres lots of em lol).
Ive been taught to take a few to get on the inside of taller ppl, but genrally you will be stronger and if tall ppl miss, they miss by a long way and its easy to slip in and counter them.
You'll learn to deal with them better, and you'll get quicker as you train so it all helps, just enjoy it. Your trainer may try n get you to eventually drop weight further, but remember if you ever compete in mma, the hieght wont play so much of a part as it does in thai.
