    I'm not from the UK but being in the US my guess is in large part becuase the UFC being the largest MMA promotion in the world has put on 100's of shows in the US - I think that has had a large impact on the industry in general. It's in our backyard so we tend to have more avenues to train, watch and support the sport in general.

    Oh and high school wrestling is very big in the states! MMA is a natural outlet for these guys as you can't go pro in wrestling outside of the olympics you have nothing else to do!

    Overall MMA is a much more powerful industry in the US, alot of money involved which means athletes, trainers and promoters can spend more time pushing their abilities to another level. While over here the industry is tiny , the payouts are poor and the exposure to main stream is overall dire.

    You would have to be more than hardcore to take a strong stance in the MMA industry here as no one receives any support compared to the states. But thats just imo

    I think you could say this for most sports from the US compared to the UK, I think there way of life just has so much more drive and ambition to be successful in everything they do! (obviously soccer does not fall into this category lmao) and as for Thai boxers, they start trainin as nippers kickin bloody banana trees and are often fighting at a rediculously young age (often below the legal standard), having 100+ fights by late teens is not uncommon and they half of them are goosed and ready for the knackers yard by mid 20's :/

    hi all, this may be off the subject a little but, my son and his friends never liked school and begged daily to stay off, any way the school got a new teacher from the rough side of manchester, and he was big on table tennis, and because of the schools where he used to teach, he had a better understanding of kids, instead of talking at them, he would talk to them, and he set up table tennis every night after school at school in his own time for free, and for the love of his sport, and now i can not keep my son away from school, his grades have shot up and in general his whole attitude is better, within 8 months he has become 1 of the best students and an excellent table tennis player, just shows what kids can do when someone believes in them and shows direction and dedication for a sport

    definately.

    self-fulfilling prophecy when kids arnt believed in

    I agree its mainly down to the funding of sports in this country, and think the situation will be just as bad after the 2012 olympics.

    Not sure if it's already been said, but;

    America has far more people to choose from.

    Physical masculinity is more pronounced out there, but then again everything is with the amount of people they have.

    America has sports where size matters, in fact pretty much all their best sports involve size, power, strength. In England, our main sport is football (soccer). They have ice hockey (possibly the most aggressive/violent team sport in America), NFL (american footy), baseball (super jacked up steroid monsters swinging a bat) etc.

    It's obviously not a genetic issue, but an environmental one. Also bearing in mind our economy state country means a lot of people are happy to sit on their hands in front of the telly and live off benefits for the rest of their lives. I feel it means so much more for those of a less wealthy background to get up and make something of their lives to break the chain, and those that go into sports tend to do pretty well if they have the discipline!

    Basically what everyone said.

    There's a larger emphasis on athletics from a younger age in the States. There's more money pumped into the school's athletic and sports system, and competition is fierce from a young age. Nearly every kid in America is pretty much forced to play sports over the weekend.

    Being incredibly athletic, I feel I was born in the wrong country. =(
