    cutting

Right, I'm not a fighter, at least not until I lose some more fear of becoming a lot less good looking than I am now, which in all fairness isn't far off. I have though had a lot of judo fights and am going into my first luta livre fight in a few weeks. Whilst I was training last night, some of the guys were talking about cutting weight for a fight that they have in two weeks. Now these guys look similar size to me although in fairness, I do have a bit of belly fat, which they might not actually have. Anyway, unless I am way off as to how much I think they weigh similar to me, they are looking to cut to 77kg! I am 90kg. They were nervous about doing and a little unsure as to whether they could achieve it. Now if you ask me to cut to 77 I would say I could never do it, not in that time scale, perhaps never! I must have about 1/2 - stone to loose of fat though but in two weeks?

I just wandered what peoples top tips were for cutting, I don't mean your standard water loss, which is quite easy to do, I mean getting rid of what for some will be 13kg in two weeks - that's two stone and so must be fat. How do they do it?

If you want to lose fat it's all about diet and exercise. Burn off more calories than you consume.

    that's still water.

7700 of cals per KG of fat. 7700 x 13. Thats 100100 cal defecit over the 2 weeks. Spread that over 14 days gives you a cal defecit of 7150 every day for 2 weeks. With the foos required to provide the energy for the exercise, lets for arguments sake say its 2500. You would need to exercise to the sum of 9650kcals per day.

So for me its not possible. The majority of it is water loss.

But to answer your Q mate. If you wanted to do it. Your 90kg, you need to run 6 and a bit hours at 10 mph every day for 14 days. Easy. Once you have done that, I'd probably get in touch with the GB olympic team and say hello and Adidas for a fat sponsorship.

Ha, I know the physiology of it, which is why I am unsure as to how they do it! I want to ask them what they take, they must take something but I don't want to offend!

At least a combination of some of the following:-

fat burners (or illegal cutters), saunas, sweating it out (i.e plastic wraps whilst training etc)not eating and or not drinking, diuretics (i.e dandelion route etc etc), water loading/restriction, sodium loading/restriction and salt baths!....then after weight in slow intake of water, protein and carbs on the hour every hour (and a good non harsh electrolyte drink or 2).

Would not recommend most of the above unless you are supervised/in close contact (daily) with someone who has the above cutting down, otherwise you could kill or damage yourself...so hard training and a medium strength (until you have worked your way up the ladder) fat burner with a high protein intake is what I would recommend if you have to go it alone.

in which case its likely done with thermogenics, ephidrine and/or clen and a test product of some sort. still not going to be all fat though, (or even mostly fat) and i would strongly suggest that it wasnt sustainable. imagine if it were sustainable and safe or even with only moderate health risks, even at a price there woulddnt be a fat middle class person around.

if it's a same day weigh-in (as is the norm with grappling comps) then 'cutting' (which is different to weight loss) that much weight will be detrimental.

I did a cut this week - from 72kg on Monday to 65.8kg yesterday - and it wasn't too bad, just takes a bit of discipline and hard work. By fight time later on I should be back up to where I started-ish.

    Here's the short version:-

    This just covers fluid restriction:-

The simplest and most effective way to begin the weight cutting process is to decrease or stop fluid intake. Your body is constantly losing fluid by breathing, sweating and urination. Every minute and hour that this goes by without replacing the fluid, you will lose weight. This process takes no extra energy from a fighter to complete, and you can lose up to 5-6 pounds in 24 hours without drinking. Most athletes never go over 24 hours without fluid, and usually start the fluid restriction exactly 24hours before the weigh in. Before beginning the fluid restriction, there are some tricks to losing the maximum amount of fluid over that 24 hours.

For the fifth, fourth and third days before the weigh in, consume 2 gallons of water a day. Then carry a gallon jug around with you so you know how much fluid you are taking in. At this time, you can also can be more liberal with sodium in your diet (don’t go heavy on the sodium, but a little increase can help later as you will see).

This increased water intake triggers hormones in the body to excrete more urine than usual. This response will be essential in losing fluid the day before the weigh in. Two days before the weigh in, you should cut the fluid intake to one gallon of water, and cut out the sodium from the diet. Finally, the last day before the weigh in, you take in no fluids, no sodium, and only a power bar. This process is effortless, and only requires a little discipline and tolerance of a dry mouth.
