Default Advice needed on beating heavier opponent

Anyone have any tips or advice on what to look for against much bigger or heavier opponents in BJJ?

I only started last monday at Gracie Barra Manchester & Preston... I'm 5"9ish and 10 stone. The guys in my academy are mostly 12-18 stone ..and some are like 6"2-6"5 tall. So I am at a big weight and height disadvantage..and they have been at the academy longer than me...so I can't use superior technique to do well against them..

So what can I do to maximise my success against a much bigger and heavier opponent?

So far I have practiced technique drills on the guy that is the nearest size and weight to me.. he has been at the academy on/off for 1 year...and he is about 5"10 and 11 stone. Now..this guy is only 1 stone heavier than me...but in the last 10 minutes of our class.. we got told:

"One of you take full mount and try for submissions, the other must try to sweep".

So when he was in full mount on me..he kept moving higher and higher...all I could do was struggle and kinda shrimp to keep him lower than my chest..but it was very difficult for me as he felt strong and heavy..i managed to survive the full 5 minutes, but I was exhausted after non stop struggling/defending to stop him subbing me.

So this makes me think "oh crap...what happens if I get partnered with a dude thats even heavier..like 12-18 stone..I will be totally screwed".

So please... can any experienced BJJ'er give me some tips on what I can do?

Thanks!

Bring a girl I was told to try and get into butterfly position or open guard as it keeps the weight of them of you abit. A thing you could try is putting your hands on their hips pushing them up whilst trying to get your knee through, keep trying that to get into butterfly position.

Im not overally experienced but that can work, you gotta practice getting your leg through though. Your 5ft 9 so it mighten be too bad if you guys are taller

I seen this in another post that Ste posted:

Quote:
Bucking alone against someone with good balance will edge them up closer to your arms, if your arms aren't tucked in they can then isolate the arm if they keep their knees pinned to your body, resulting in their kneecaps touching your armpits...

My technique is for example to

* have your arms bent and tucked in (elbow tips pinned to your ribs)
* keep your left leg staight,
* slightly turn onto your left hip (not much though as this can give your back away)
* whilst using your left elbow to nudge his right knee vertically away from you
* and with your right foot bring this towards your left knee region (this is where his foot would presumably be)
* and scoop his foot pinning it to the mat
^ quickly turn off your left hip coming onto your right hip, you will then be escaped
* often the opponent can go into a doggy style position from the escape momentum, which if you keep hugged to the body
* you can obtain his back... or after the escape you can gain butterfly guard or half-guard
