Hi all,
Just found this site and you people seem friendly and informative so i joined up immediately!
I'm 26 from Leeds, and I've been a fan of mma since i was 12 or 13 when my dad rented ufc 3 on video. After seeing Keith Hackney Vs Emanuell Yarbrough i was hooked for life!
I've memorized hundreds of moves from various martial arts, theoretically, but i don't train and I'm not a member of any club/gym, etc. I'm merely a spectator of this fantastic sport.
My goal in life is to organise the biggest mma events in the uk (naive? nah!). But, of course, I'll have to start small with a modest (but no less exciting) event.
In the coming weeks and months I'll be posting threads asking for suggestions/opinions/advice on many things relating to stageing an mma event from scratch.
So in the meantime, what's it to be? Ring or Cage? Tournament or not? Time limits? Minimum rules?
Your help will be much appreciated.

Y'alright, lad! Welcome to the site! Hope you get to enjoy it as much as we do!
As for your questions, I'll let someone else answer them; I don't train in MMA [yet]. =P

I'd go with the typical Cage, 3x5 minute rounds, and UFC rules.
A tournament would be a cool idea!

Welcome to the forum phil...
The thing ive come to realise is nobody likes change, there is a new org just started and they have changed the rules considerably, the amount of grief they had was unreal, forced them to change a few things round to suit spectators and fighters.
So if you do start your own org be wary of that and if you introduce rules such as tag teams, no chokes, no head kicks etc...expect to get ridiculed at the highest order
I would imagine it would cost a helluva lot of money to start and organisation off though, particularly of you've got plans of making it a big one....so i hope you've got deep pockets

I know first hand as im a registered fighter for Pro Kumite lol.
Welcome to the site mate and it's nice to see you have aspirations to take UK MMA to a new level.
I would advise sticking to the cage as it is statistically safer for the fighters than a ring.
Round duration i would say stick to the generalized format of 3x5 minute rounds or 2x5 for amateur or if you fancy doing something a little different do the old style Pride 10 min first round 5 min second round.
I'd like to see the old tournament style format brought back to the fore of MMA as i think it does sort the best from the best. * The Dream GP's have been really good and the old Pride tournaments rocked *
And as for rules i would stick to the unified rules established recently but stay away from the unified weight classes * too many of the like boxing *
Once again welcome.

I was going to say take a look at Pro Kumite as they seem to be the newest guys to hit the uk scene and change the format a bit.
One peice of advice, dont pull an event - no matter what.

Hiya Phil and welcome...
My 1 and only thread - as I am crap on the computer was riohereos - check em out - thats what I like the old school!!!!, but to be honest you would save yourself a lot of hard work and potential law suits if you stuck to a) a cage B)standard MMA rules - as Chase said still gives you some leverage re round times a la Pride etc - I think their would be a market especially amongst the BJJ fans for no time limit - this only came into place for TV -as Royce V's Servern?? overran and TV viewers missed the end and led to major kickoff's. Best of luck either way - also agree re cage being safer.
