    Question Making the transition

    Hi forum,

Im new to the forum, just looking for advise on making the transition from muaythai to mma.

I have trained in muaythai for about 7-8yrs and also instructed for my club (K-Star muaythai birmingham)for about 3yrs. Im current 72.2kg pro english champion and been fighting full thai rules for 2yrs now. I have 3 losses in 15 bouts.

I dont instruct anymore due to family commitments i might ad.

Ive had a big soft spot for mma for many years and popped in and out of grappling classes over the years but of resent its become my focus over muaythai.

the advise i need now you all now my back ground is where do i start, ie.. at the bottom might give me some sort of advantage seems my MT background. Or do i take on a slightly higher level and run the risk of losing my arm (maybe career)in a ground game i may not cope with.

Bloody hell i wrote a lot. Soz

    lol, welcome,

i say you start from scratch, cuz evan in sparring if someone knowss your MT background there not gunna wanna stand with you, and when they take you down you need to know how to protect yourself, but im sure lots of differnt ideas will help you make the right choice?

There are many avenues to start now mate that will help you utilise your skills and remain safe/at a good level at the same time.

I'd reccomend Marc Goddard's AMMA show in Birmingham. You don't have to jump in full pro rules, you'll me matched well and the show is great for guys starting out. "Semi-pro" rules (although I don't like the term) would suit your skill set it seems. PM me or something if you have any more specific questions or need pointing in the right direction.

Start with your ground game mate. You have a good stand up MA, Well id say the best, All you need now is BJJ or a Style of Wrestling, Personally id go with BJJ. Get in with a BJJ Class in Birmingham.

Personally Id get good at your ground game first. Here ya are...

    Gracie Barra Birmingham

When you feel you are ready:

Start off with S/Pro and work you way up, until you feel you can handle the next level step.

Hello mate. Ive transitioned from thai too., like you, got a soft spot for mma, but the last time I did thai was back in sept08 and since april this year, ive been doing bjj. You will probably be absoultly lost on the ground to start with, but if you put in the effort, it all starts to click. At very least you need to know how to aviod takedowns, transitions, and defences ( that is if you want to stay away from the ground game) but give it a try, you may become hooked pretty fast.

Will be good to get your input into standup tech on the site too.

I would take on a class a week of judo. Differant world. BJJ gets all the attention but after 7 years of stand up your not going to become a submission expert, a good judo stand up will help you control the fight stood up and make you much less likely to make mistakes when someone wants to twist your arm up your arse using BJJ.

^^^^ Well what happens when you throw the opponent down? Its all well being able to throw someone down to the ground, but if you have no ground game, when they can control you down there, there is no ground and pound! you will get no where in MMA, You need a ground Discipline, You will always get an opp who will take you down and control you on the floor.

And becoming a submission expert!? Why not, Yes you can!!! Thats just retarded! lol
