I've always been interested in MMA but only recently though I'd like to do it! I'm at a good level of fitness and bviously used to a contact sport thorugh rugby. There is an MMA gym local to me,which I plan to go to. How many times would you advice I go a week if serious about starting to want to fight. Also the is a BJJ place quite local and a Muay Thai place, would you recomend I mix it up and attend these aswell?? If so how often??? All advice much appreciated,,,CHEERS

:welcome And like said above, definetely get yourself down to bjj, n thai. As for frequency, start slow, or if your in shape, as much as you can do, or afford.

This is a hard one, you will get so many diff answer. If it was me id split both 50/50 why your new, once you see what your naturally better at then id prob push that. I feel being excellent at one thing is better than being ok at everything.

If its MMA that you want to do the most then I would concentrate on those sessions first and foremost in order to learn the basics then if you find gaps in your MMA training that need filling consider cross training.

After a while doing MMA you will develop a style of your own that will probably be bias to a greater or lesser degree towards striking or submissions. Once youve discovered that then you will be in the best position to determine where your weaknesses are and cross train appropriately.

Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu are both excellent areas to cross train in but I would personally exalt the benefits of getting some formal wrestling training because i am of the opinion that if striking is the gate and submissions are the fence then wrestling is the hinge that connects the two.

Wrestling provides the skill to dictate where the fight will take place as a top wrestler will be able to take his opponant down at will if he wants to take the fight to the ground. Alternatively wrestlers are uniquely equipped to defend the takedown should they wish to keep the fight standing.

Hi mate, I quit Rugby last season aswell to take up MMA. You will love it although the warm up and phys training is at the next level!! I would agree with everyone else do a striking discipline and ground work. I do kickboxing with BJJ. I would say you may have to let the rugby go as i definately could not do the both myself. Welcome aboard buddy.
