    Getting started

Hey all! Basically just after some advice on getting started! Basicaly I play rugby and have done for some years and want a change,MMA! I've always been interested in MMA but only recently though I'd like to do it! I'm at a good level of fitness and bviously used to a contact sport thorugh rugby. There is an MMA gym local to me,which I plan to go to. How many times would you advice I go a week if serious about starting to want to fight. Also the is a BJJ place quite local and a Muay Thai place, would you recomend I mix it up and attend these aswell?? If so how often??? All advice much appreciated,,,CHEERS

Regarding how often you should go, well you have to set your own pace but like with most things practice makes perfect so the general rule is the more frequently you go, the better. If you decide you want to compete then regular training is a must.

Cross training in other martial arts is generally considered a very good thing, especially martial arts like kickboxing and jui-jitsu which are considered quite complementary to MMA but again I would use your judgement for this because how useful it is will probably depend on how good your MMA sessions are and also on how good the place youre cross training at is. No point crosstraining at all if its at a crappy gym where youre learning nothing.

If youre a regular sportsperson then that will leave you in good stead for practicing MMA although it is a completely different type of fitness for the most part. Its also good that youre used to taking knocks because you'll get plenty in MMA from falling, being thrown, being kicked and punched, accidents such as catching the stray knee in the much or kick in the spuds plus all the other nasty little niggles you tend to get from training. Generally nothing too serious will happen though and I would actually consider MMA somewhat safer than Rugby.
