Full Contact Fight in Feb
Hey all,
I was at training today and my instructor mentioned there is an oppertunity to take part in a full contact kickboxing event. I said yes as its not until Febuary so I have a lot of time to train but could do with some advice, anyone got any good training tips or things I can focus on that will be useful in the ring.
Its going to be 3 x 2 minutes.

find out what the rules are!!!! is it american i.e no kicks under waist - have to throw so many kicks per round is it Thai - but called kickboxing etc - other than that train hard and trust your coach.

good luck with the training, get some fight sparring in mate, and hopefully you get matched for the event.

Im not sure about the kick limit but im confident its above the waist, no knees or elbows. Good point though I should probably find out what Im letting myself in for before hand. I trust my coach implicitly so Im not expecting to be thrown to the wolves.
Gym is closed until new year now but sparring at least twice a week usually and Im starting to push for two minute rounds. Im planning on being able to fight 4x2 minute rounds with a fresh fighter for each although most of the sparring is fairly light. I do have an experienced fighter who I can spar heavily with but he tires out to quickly to go the distance.

Thats two sessions a week with 6/7 fights between 1:30 and 2:00, it depends on numbers turning up to the class and how up for it they are. A few tend to put in very light two/three fights and start getting out of there gear.

I would say spar more than what you are doing, mention it to your coach and he may spar with you for the full time your gunna have in the fight. I have 2 2 hour classes a week but go in tuesday and thursday for a few hours so my coach knows I'm devoted. I'll hopefully be fighting at one of the shows this year anyway.

Most of the people at the gym aren't heavy sparrers and the ones that are don't attend with a great frequency. I'm trying to step everything up at the moment to improve me;
bag work - heavy, hard, fast and focusing on kicks and kick combinations (my toes are nice and black).
pad/focus work - fast, heavy, boxing combinations, head movement and tight guard.
Picking up the weights on my off days, nothing major just dumbell complex sets.
What would you consider full contact kicks and combinations? Im thinking of focusing on these in sparring and training. Obvious ones are Front Kick, Side Kick, Turning Kick/round house Back leg, Axe Kick and Back Kick. No point in working technical kicks that aren't effective.

I wouldn't bother to much with the axe kick tbh

ok now looks like we aren't going to the full contact event as no further information has come through. We are however going to Telford for Light Continous event, its at Bai Lang Martial Arts on 7th Feb, so no calendar change but no win by glorious KO. Gutted, but its all still experience.
Even with two weeks out of the gym over the christmas period Im still at 82kgs woohoo. Im starting to be more aggressive in sparring as apposed to my more light/defensive sparring incase any more events come around.

that happens quite often mate, but your gunna be in shape for the competition so its all good.
