    Best counter style to thai

my training partner of 3 years started doing thai boxing at a separate club a few months back. and i must say hes picked it up very quickly big improvements in his clinch and leg kickd (bruises are apart of my daily life now lol). so i figured since we both come from a full contact kick boxing background and thai boxing seems to work nicely with that. what can i try to even the playing field i was thiking taking up judo so i can work some takedowns in the clinch or going back to my full contact kb routes for a brush up. what styles have any of you found to work good against a thai boxer??

I do judo and I must say that to learn the throws in the gi is hard enough. To then re learn them in modification without the gi is harder but possible. that said, if you're mate has a good clinch it may be harder!

My kids do thai and fight quite often and when they spar together They know what each are good at and avoid it so one of them is good at the clinch and with his hands so the other stays away and uses front kicks and low leg kicks as much as posible.

From this, I would suggest that you get to know his strengths and work opposing them. If his clinch is good then I would look to shoot for a single or double.

aww i see so instead of trying to better him clinch avoid it all together and use wrestling which would work well as now you mention it he has been neglecting his bjj since he started thai so i would have the upper hand thanks. i think ill still have a play with judo though it seems one of those things if used in thee right way its very effective

It helps me more with control on the ground in mma than stood up although there are times that simple techniques from judo help to take down and also in understanding posture. But mainly on the ground as don't forget bjj is just brazilian judo

learn some thai, or wrestling or BJJ or better still all 3 and get your conditioning as good as possible...then you will be a god my son.

Seriously, if you learn to check kicks thai style your half way home and learn counter strikes/clinches to his ....saves having to learn a whole new system if you just wanna out do your mate - or as above if you have lots of time on your hands :thumb

Does he like to throw punches as much as kicks/knees/elbows? if he does are they as sharp as his kicks/knees/elbows?, if not surely you could sneak in some work on your hands?
